Dirt Jobs

Mike Rowe has been the host of many different shows but all around the same theme. Dirt Jobs. He doesn't just interview the people who do the dirty jobs. He goes to the job sites and does those jobs. Experiencing the challenges and dignity of all kinds of blue collar professions. So, he gets a lot of people who come up to him to thank him. Recently, he talked about a couple of these reactions.

Mike said, "this guy comes down off a ladder and he points at me and says, ‘Mike Row’. And I say, Yeah.

"He says, ‘hey man, I just want to thank you for doing the show you’re doing because every Tuesday night I watch it with my family and my kids and when I see you doing these things on the show I can say to my kids see there’s dignity in every job and just because you’re out of sight and out of mind doesn’t mean you’re not doing important work.’

"It makes me feel great and I thank him. Another guy recognizes me. Wall Street. Brooks Brothers suit. Taking big steps. Sees me, goes, ‘Mike Rowe!’ I say, hey, how are you? We shake hands, I’m great.  He says, ‘I just want to say I love your show. I watch every week with my wife and my kids and we laugh, and it’s great because after each segment I can turn to my kids and say, see what happens if you don’t go to college.’

"And I’m like, to myself, No, no, you missed it. That’s not the point of the show."

He did miss it, didn't he? All jobs are important. There's dignity in dirty jobs. Hard work can cure health issues. Dispel depression. Remove loneliness. Give you purpose and a sense of pride. My dad always said, "you may not always be proud of the job you have, but you can always be proud of the job you do."

[Funny Clarification: What Rowe did at the end of this story is he dropped his head on a microphone he was holding and it made a clunk sound as he said to the audience "No No, you missed it....]
