Object: A pair or two of gloves

Good morning, boys and girls. This morning I want to tell you the story of how gloves helped to make one of the most famous of all Christmas carols very popular. Can you imagine what a pair of gloves has to do with the singing of a Christmas carol? (Show the gloves.)

A long time ago a minister by the name of Joseph Mohr wrote a poem which he called "Silent Night." It was a lovely poem, and he wanted to read it on Christmas Eve. But then he had another thought. Maybe the church organist would write some music to the poem and all of the people could sing it on Christmas Eve. He took his poem to the organist, Franz Gruber, who agreed to write some music and have it ready in time for the service.
