This pericope overlaps two sections: vv. 33-38, describing the crucifixion; and vv. 39-43, dealing with the penitent thief. Luke clearly distinguishes between the people who stood watching and the rulers and soldiers who sneered and scoffed, showing the latter as universal symbols representing the enemies of the Gospel.
