It is interesting to note that in Matthew's account of the Ascension, he says, "Now the eleven disciples went up to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted." He gives absolutely no explanation for this either.
What did they doubt? Did they doubt that it was Jesus? Did they doubt that he had been dead, or that he was apparently alive before their eyes? Since they were doubting before Jesus apparently rose into the air and disappeared into a cloud, we can assume levitation was not the source of their doubt.
