Details of the Wall Building: Here, by contrast, is a list of those who had a “share,” a “claim,” and a “historic right” in Jerusalem (2:20), and who proudly exercised their privileges by rebuilding its wall. Nehemiah evidently persuaded them that the “welfare of the Israelites” (2:10) was at stake. This section seems to have originated as a separate list found in the temple archives: it gives pride of place to the high priest (v. 1). Instead of first-person references to Nehemiah, he is probably mentioned in the third person in verse 5. Chapter 3 describes the complete rebuilding of the wall, including the gates, and so it does not fit the sequence of the rest of the narrative, in which the wall was built in separate stages (4:6–7) and the gates were not fully restored until the last stag…
