31:12–18 The Lord told Moses to remind the people of the gift of Sabbath rest, that God established in the creation, and of God’s holiness, conferred upon them. They were to remember that the Lord created the world in six days and rested on the seventh. The people were about to begin the creation of the tabernacle as God’s work in the world. The Lord made the earth as a dwelling place for them. Now they were going to make a dwelling for the Lord. They, too, must rest from making the tabernacle each week, remembering the Creator as the source of all things. Weekly “holy time” remembering the Lord takes precedence even over building the holy space. The Sabbath command would be Moses’ first word to the people of all that the Lord had shown him.
