... a great influence on my sense of justice and standing up for what is right especially in the area of race relationships. The book is pure fiction but the lesson is unforgettable and was life shaping. I wanted to grow up and be just like Atticus Finch. The parables of Jesus were stories designed to teach lessons. We weren't told to go and physically look for the Prodigal Son. But we did learn a deep lesson about grace and repentance and how much God loves us. In that sense, our response to the story is more ...

... acquire them? As Christian people we know the kind of life we ought to live, and most of us have the best of intentions to do so, but how? We are afraid because we know where the road paved with only good intentions leads! This morning we hear Jesus' parable of the fig tree, telling us to repent and bear good fruit. We know what the Christian life requires of us and yet, if we are honest with ourselves, we also know how far short we fall. So the question that confronts us this morning is: "Yes, but how?"

... and say, "For goodness sakes, why doesn't someone do something about this?" I know a lot of "goodness-sakers". They're always saying "for goodness sake, something ought to be done." But they never get around to sharing in the doing of it. So the obvious truth of the parable is that unfruitfulness is not allowed God's vineyard. Uselessness is a sin because it means that when we are useless we fall short of God's intention for us.

Because you belong to our heavenly father. In the parable of the lost coin, we read where a woman turns her house upside down in search for a missing coin. Will God not literally turn the world upside down in his search for one lost soul?

Jesus is telling this parable to a group of people who are self-righteous "elder brothers," people who were angry with him for celebrating life with the down-and-out poor. ... Jesus overheard their comments and knew their hearts and so told them three stories that reveal the heart of God. And that's really what is going on in Luke 15: we're not here first of all being given stories of the "go and do likewise" variety. The parable in verses 11-32 is not in Scripture first of all to encourage fathers to be forgiving of their naughty kids any more than the first two stories were an instruction to shepherds or a cautionary tale to take better care of your fiscal assets. No, all three ...

... Waikiki Beach . It said, " Charlotte, I love you." That's the greatest sentence ever written. And there are many variations of it. And wherever it is heard, and from whatever source it comes, it constitutes a blessing. It is here in this text this morning. It's here in the parable of the Prodigal Son, and it's addressed to everyone. To sons and to daughters, to prodigals and to the righteous: "Come home. I love you."

... his lap, steadied her head against his shoulder, and held her tightly in his arms. The surgeon then quickly did his work… and sewed up the cut in her eye-lid… and the little girl did not flinch. She just held on tight to her Father. That's a parable for us in our spiritual lives and a graphic reminder of the Good News of Christmas and part of the reason Jesus came. The Apostle Paul in Philippians 4:13 writes: "I can do all things through him who strengthens me." The Surprise of Christmas is the simple ...

But then what a surprise for everyone of the characters in the parable, both the sheep and the goats. They'd met Jesus in the face and presence of strangers and didn't even know it. We meet Jesus and can see the face of Jesus every day in the face of family, friends, neighbors and especially in the face of strangers ...

... most when we need it most. That's not to say that God doesn't love us when we're good; when we're on the right path; when we're living in God's will. God loves us then, just like the father loved the eldest son in the parable of the prodigal son. But God's love is deeper and closer when we feel broken and abandoned because God's heart breaks for us. And God desires for us to be healed and whole and back home with Christ where we belong. When we are in need of healing ...
