I know a couple who have on their wall a framed piece of needlework that someone gave them for a wedding gift. It has their names and their wedding date, and it says, "God gave us each other." I think many Christian couples believe that they were brought together by God's providence. People often feel the same way about their vocations, believing they have been led into a particular life's work by God. As a church, we trust that our plans and decisions are guided by God's spirit. But why would we think ...
Step six: Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character. Here is Isaiah, whom we saw in last week's text being so awed by God's presence, so totally aware of his uncleanness before God. His was a majestic experience of worship. In this morning's text God speaks through Isaiah, questioning the validity of the people's worship. The local Chamber of Commerce recently came out with a listing of the best of Gwinnett. It listed the best pizza, the best athlete, the best country road. And ...
H. A. Williams, one of the leading preachers and theologians of the Church of England, titled his autobiography, Someday I’ll Find You. That may seem like an unusual title for an autobiography, but if you read the book, as I did when I was a seminary student, it begins to make sense. You see, there was a period in Dr. Williams’ life when he was almost totally incapacitated by phobic anxieties. He was afraid to into the streets and marketplaces, afraid of elevators and escalators, afraid to ride on trains ...
A couple of years ago, The Mattel Corporation marketed a new version of their immensely popular (and now somewhat controversial) Barbie Doll. This particular model could "talk." And one of the phrases in her vocabulary was, "Math is hard." I can’t argue with that. Anything beyond simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division has always given me difficulty. I can balance my checkbook, but don’t ask me to figure out algebraic equations (as my daughter can tell you). But several national women’s ...
Lent 1 Minister: "The Lord spoke to Moses: ... you shall set up the tabernacle ... And the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle" (Exodus 40:1, 2, 34). "The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Speak to the people of Israel saying: ... lasting seven days, there shall be the festival of tabernacles" (Leviticus 23:33f). Youth: Why do we have this decoration in our sanctuary today? Reader 1: This is a model of the tabernacle, booth or temporary hut built by each Jewish family in Jesus' time for Sukkot or the ...
Object: A crown of thorns Good morning, boys and girls. Perhaps you will remember where we left off last week with our story, but let me tell you a little bit about what has happened to Jesus since we left Him being taken out of Annas' house and over to the house of Caiaphas, another Jewish leader. Jesus had been shoved and pushed around from one place to another. He even spent a little time in the palace of Herod, a kind of Jewish king who worked for the Romans. All of these people were afraid to do ...
I don't know how many of you have seen the movie Sister Act, but if you haven't, you probably should. It is filled with good humor, but it also makes a marvelous point. In the movie a casino singer witnesses a gangster execution and then agrees to testify. In order to protect this "wild woman of the world," the police hustle her off to an inner-city convent in San Francisco to pose as a nun so they can keep her hidden and safe until the trial. In the first place, she doesn't want to be there and keeps ...
I know it’s not summer yet, but the summer SEASON has already begun – at least, as far as department stores and Hollywood are concerned. The summer season for those who manufacture and sell summer clothing items, and for those who produce, direct, and market movies for public consumption begins each year in the month of May. Of course, the biggest hit of this summer season supposedly will be the newest entry into the "Star Wars" series. As I watched and read reports about how anxious and enthusiastic ...
In 1977 two teenagers walked into a movie theatre in Memphis to watch a movie that was then virtually unknown. The name of the movie was Star Wars. The characters were unknown to my brother Todd and I. In fact, the movie was virtually unknown to many. Star Wars was not expected by anyone to be a smash hit let alone the biggest grossing movie of all times. We did know it was science-fiction. That’s the reason we went to see it; having grown up on a steady diet of comic books and Star Trek, we were a ready ...
But in those days, after that suffering, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will befalling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see "the Son of Man coming in clouds" with great power and glory. Then he will send out the angels, and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven. From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know ...
I sat with a farm family a few weeks ago for the noonday meal. The scene outside the kitchen window was typical of rural eastern North Carolina. There were open fields where this particular farmer grew corn. Leftover husks lay where he had broken the land for spring planting. While we were eating, one family member called our attention to a flock of birds that had landed in the field out back. We all turned to look, and the area was covered with blackbirds. "I'll bet there are five thousand birds out there ...
My children may not remember how I used to cross my legs, balance one of them on the toe of my shoe, hold on to their tiny hands as they leaned against my leg, and bounce them up and down, singing: Ride a cock horse to Banbury crossTo see a fine lady upon a white horse. With rings on her fingers and bells on her toes,She shall have music wherever she goes. Sometimes they would have to hang on for dear life. The ride delighted them, and I was delighted at being a young father. I assume parents of young ...
"What good does faith do me now?" I remember thinking that when Jesus was arrested and tried that first Maundy Thursday. "If a good man like Jesus has to go through all this, what kind of a just God is there? Maybe the unbelievers are right." My name is Matthew. I have come back to tell you about the week you have come to call holy. I was a tax collector before I became an apostle. Everything was going so well until that Thursday of the longest weekend in the world. When it dawned that Thursday in holy ...
Are you one of those who thinks that a true Christian is always happy? A drummer in a Salvation Army band hit his bass drum with all his might - BOOM, BOOM! The band leader suggested that it might be better if he did not hit the drum so hard. "Bless ya, sir!" explained the drummer. "Ever since I was converted, I am so happy that I could just bust this bloomin' drum!" The truth is that a Christian has times when tears are in order. In Ecciesiastes, we are told that there is "a time to weep and a time to ...
There is an old "preacher story" about the traveling evangelist who had a flair for the dramatic. His sermons were flamboyant and intensely theatrical. His ability to turn a phrase and masterfully create "word pictures" captivated his listeners almost to the point of hypnosis. He was a strong portion. After accepting an invitation to preach in a little country church, he went out early one afternoon to familiarize himself with the church and its appointments. Among other things, he observed that the ...
The Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon's obsession with discovering the fountain of eternal youth led him eventually to the land of flowers, or as we know it, Florida. Even now, there are those who claim that the bold adventurer did, in fact, discover such a fountain and that its perpetual waters contain the treasure of agelessness, or the much pursued "ever young" potion. Several years ago, somewhere in Florida, I took a drink from a fountain which was allegedly the genuine source designated by Ponce de Leon ...
If I speak in the tongues of men and angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. (verse 1) A gong has always impressed me as an almost unnecessary instrument. Each time a musician slams into one with a mallet to achieve the dull, disconcerting clash, I fully expect a secret passage to appear, or an oriental servant to fawn onto the stage. Cymbals provide slightly more flexible, functional accents of emphasis. However, both the gong and the cymbal produce but a single monotonous tone ...
Many of us grew up singing the hymn "Beneath the Cross of Jesus" with it's memorable line: "I take, O cross, thy shadow for my abiding place ..." This image of "the shadow of the cross" has been used in many different ways by poets and writers. In the hymn, it refers to a place of refuge and rest "from the burning of the noon-tide heat and the burdens of the day." The hymn also refers to the strength-giving character of the cross by comparing it to "the shadow of a mighty rock within a weary land." Surely ...
Scripture: Psalm 72:1-71 Peter 3:8-18Isaiah 9:2-7Luke 10:1-12 Text: "Peace be to this house." (Luke 10:5) Our bus pulled off the highway onto an overpass, where it stopped. The road up from Lod airport, near Tel Aviv, had displayed to us the remnants of the wars of Israel. Shelled-out tanks and armored personnel carriers were preserved where they had fallen, as memorials to the men who had fought and died there. Now our eyes were turned eastward, where we could see our first view of Jerusalem. The tour ...
[A Message for Good Friday. Bulletin outline found below.] Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see. Early in his Galilean ministry, Jesus invited Philip to follow him. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, "We have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth." Nathanael responded somewhat sarcastically, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip's simple answer was the challenge that is still given to ...
Exegetical Aim: We can not choose who we love we must love all. Props: A pair of glasses, a book or pamphlet in a foreign language, and a prescription bottle. Lesson: Good morning! (response) There is a wonderful story in the Bible about a boy who was walking down the street and some bullies surprised him and beat him up and took his milk money away from him. And then they just left him in the street. Well, what would you know! A friend of his, a neighbor, was walking down the road and saw the boy all ...
This sermon is not for heroes. It is for the hesitant and the timid. This sermon is not for the militant who march in demonstrations of protest. It is for the meek who are afraid to act out their faith in public. This sermon is not for the players on the field who "suitup" and carry the ball; it is for the spectators who sit in the stadium. This sermon is for those who are not leaders, and who never will be. This is a sermon for ordinary people. Particularly, it is for the ordinary people who, because they ...
