Rejoice and be glad in God!

God of great deeds, you are like the single mothers in our midst, who without credit, or without any backup, work, raise families, pray, and play. You have sent your servants into our midst and we have not seen you in the mirror you have provided! Challenge us to serve each other, praise each other, while serving and praising you. Amen.

Old Testament: Proverbs 31:10-31
In this epilogue in Proverbs, a godly woman is described. It is a picture far from the view that in Old Testament times, a woman was a nobody, a man's property without privileges and rights. She is a wife and mother who fears the Lord. Her husband and children praise her and call her blessed.

Mother’s Day is a time to say, "I love you."
What special day is today? Yes, it’s Mother’s Day. We started having a special day for mothers many years ago.
Even when I was a boy your age, which was a long time ago, we celebrated Mother’s Day. On that day, people would pin a flower, called a carnation, on their suit coats o...

Boys and girls, sometimes it is hard to realize that our parents were once boys and girls, too. I have these baby shoes with me this morning. These were mine when I was a small child. Can you imagine me with these little shoes on? Why I couldn't get these on my big toe now.
What special day is today? That's right, Mother's Day...

Nobody can write a letter like a mother. I can remember when I was in college my first year, I was so homesick I literally lived for those days I would go to the post office and get a letter from my Mom. I want to share with you one mother's letter to her son in college. This mother was a country lady, not very well educated, but she loved her son. This was the letter:
Dear Son:
Just a few lines...
A good woman is a superwoman, or so it appears to me as I read the list of things she can do. In this famous passage from Proverbs, we read that a good woman is precious and that her husband trusts her. A good woman is a good marketer and bargainer, buying fields, trading wool and flax, finding good food from far away. She makes her arms strong! There is certainly no picture of twenty-first-centur...
It's a question you've probably not thought much about, but were any parts of the Bible written by women? We count about forty different writers in scripture, and according to the usual assumption, all of them were men. Among the reasons for that conclusion is the fact that the dominant culture of the ancient Middle East was patriarchal. Men were in charge, and women had few rights of their own, n...
Theme: Being ready for Christ's kingdom. To be prepared, a person need only walk in the light of God's love and invest her/his talents.

The Israelites were oppressed by the Canaanites. The Hebrews cried out to God, who sent Deborah as prophetess and judge. Deborah sent Barak and a horde of Hebrews against the Canaanite king, Jabin, and his general, Siera. T...
Theme: A warning against selfish ambition, which fractures community. Rather, Jesus teaches us to receive the kingdom like a child and find our joy in Christ-like service.

Lesson 1: Proverbs 31:10-31 (C)
This description of a more than capable wife contrasts with the position of women in most of the societies of the Middle East. In many cultures women were almost considered property. ...

There's an old story about a family with four children, who was celebrating Mom's birthday. Dad and the kids decided to create their own birthday presents for Mom that year. Mom sat in her favorite chair expectantly.
The oldest girl wrote Mom a poem. "Roses are red, violets are blue; You are the best Mom, It really is true." She had written it on a piece of paper and decorated the edges like a ce...
Once upon a time, a certain town grew up at the foot of a mountain range. It was sheltered in the lee of the protecting heights, so that the wind that shuddered at the doors and flung handfuls of sleet against the window panes was a wind whose fury was spent. High up in the hills, a strange and quiet forest dweller took it upon himself to be the Keeper of the Springs. He patrolled the hills and wh...
Lesson: Honor your father and mother.
Object: Carnations
Good morning, boys and girls. Today is a special day, isn't it? It's not a holiday as such, but it is a day that we set aside to honor our mothers. It is right for us to do that because we have been instructed in the Bible to do so. But, more than that, mothers are sort of special people to us, aren't they?
Would you like to know how we h...
Proverbs 31:10–31 is stylistically distinct from the preceding set of admonitions. (The only imperative [command] is in the final verse.) In a twenty-two-verse alphabetic poem, in which each succeeding verse begins with the next Hebrew letter, a woman is presented who embodies all of wisdom’s skills and virtues, from a to z. In context this section serves to counterbalance the initial admonition a...
They were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them; they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. He took the twelve aside again and began to tell them what was to happen to him, saying, See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death; then they will hand him ov...
Dial 0 [Tell of how it was that they exuded the tenderness, the love, the compassion, the warmth which that operator exhibited.] A prominent speaker in the United Kingdom once told of how, when he was six years old, his mother explained that if he ever needed help, he should dial zero for Operator and ask for information. One day, when the boy’s mother was away, his pet canary, which always sang f...
11:1 Antithetic. Honesty in business transactions is emphasized by the sages (cf. 16:11; 20:10, 23; see also Deut. 25:15).
11:2 Antithetic. This is a popular proverb in many cultures (cf. 15:33; 16:18; 18:12). It is an observation drawn from experience with many applications. The meaning of humility here is an honest evaluation of oneself, the avoidance of arrogance. For the assonance in verse 2a...
12:1 Antithetic and juxtapositional. The sages are emphatic in teaching the need for discipline and openness to reproof. Discipline (mûsār) is a mark of love (13:24), but it is also parallel to corporal punishment. It has a wide range of meaning, such as “instruction” or correction (as the word pair in this verse suggests). Stupid is, literally, “brutish, like an animal.”
12:2–3 Antithetic. These...

A U.S. Air Force transport plane with its captain and 5 crew members was flying over Alaska in the mid-50s when they entered an unusually fierce snowstorm. The navigator contacted an air base only to be told that he had veered several hundred miles off course. Correct coordinates were given to the navigator, who continued to insist that his own calculations could not be that far off. Soon the plan...
Object: a picture of a dog, cat, or rabbit
Good morning, boys and girls. Do you like this picture of a special pet? This is a dog named Heinrick who lives at our house. We love Heinrick very much, and he’s certainly a part of our family.
I’ll bet many of you have pets at your house. Tell me about your pet and what your pet’s name is.

He was the first billionaire in the history of the world. At one time, the company he started, Standard Oil Company, controlled and marketed ninety-percent of the oil produced in America. We have today, Exxon, Mobil, Amoco and Chevron, because of this man's vision and ingenuity. For the vast majority of his life, he was by far and away, the richest man in the world. Even today, the name Rockefelle...
13:1 Antithetic. Literally, verse 1a exhibits juxtaposition: “a wise son—a father’s discipline” (see the Additional Notes). In any case, the emphasis is on docility and openness to learning.
13:2 See 12:14a and 18:20. The MT reads: “From the fruit of his mouth a man eats good (things),” that is, there is profit from his words. This presumes that the speech of a (good) person will be rewarded. The...
14:1 Antithetic. The NIV has rendered the general sense, but see the Additional Notes. A real house might be meant, but more probably it is a metaphor for home—the family or even for one’s own life; see 24:3 and 31:10–31.
14:2 Antithetic and juxtapositional. Here is an obvious contrast between the just and the wicked in their relationships to the LORD.
14:3 Antithetic. Here is another example of...
