He says, in the midst of the ruins, is an "opportunity to testify." Even though we are surrounded by rubble and trouble, even though we suffer abuse and persecution for our efforts, we proclaim the Gospel to a new generation and even in new ways to enable folks to hear and respond who have never been able to before. How? Listen to Jesus. For starters, "Beware that you ...

... and see what the Lord has done. The verbs are plural and most likely spoken to the nations, since they have just been mentioned in verse 6. Yet it could be a summons to Israel also, since the poem is a meditation on Israel’s struggle with the troubles of their world and the power of their God. After reviewing God’s mighty acts in nature, performed by the Creator God, Abraham and Jacob’s God, Israel invites the nations to “come and see” what the Lord has done in their history. 46:9  He makes wars ...

... of the word rage, we think of the winds, the oceans, waves, water, hurricanes. But James knew the greatest threat to the church was not the weather but the weapon of the human heart infected by sin. James identifies two primary wars or conflicts that cause trouble in the church. First, we are at war with each other--and second, at war with God. These conflicts are deeply interrelated. Let us look quickly at verses one and two. Here, James addresses the age-old problem of fussing and fighting among God''s ...

... bunny story?" asks Rob. The little blond head bobs happily. "With a truck in it." "With a truck in it," repeats Rob. "Okay, climb up here." And placing Jack on his knee, Rob begins spinning a tale about a mischievous bunny who gets into all kinds of trouble while zipping around in his great, big truck. Every great story has to have an obstacle or a villain. And to keep from overtaxing his imagination, Rob uses the same stock villain in every bunny story--the bad, old Wolf. And so Rob, begins introducing the ...

... . A balanced, healthy diet, aerobic exercise, less stress, and good rest are all ways each person can treat their heart better. And there are medicines and medical procedures that can help the human heart. Because, left alone, heart trouble can kill you. Jesus spoke of the heart in a different way. He wasn't speaking about the central organ of the human body. He meant the center of our personality. Our heart in this sense is the source of our desires, our intentions and actions. And according to Jesus ...

... afraid or filled with anger and hate. At times like that we need to take it back to its maker. Who is the maker of hearts? That's right, God. We need to go to God when our hearts are troubled and pray, "Lord, I'm lonely. I'm afraid. I feel so angry. Will you help me?" And you know He does. God hears our prayer and helps our troubled heart. When you give someone a heart, it usually means, "I love you," doesn't it? I love each of you. God loves you even more. And when your heart is ...

34. The Bible On Troubles

The Bible is realistic about troubles: Trouble seems to be woven into the fabric of living (Job 14:1). Many of our distresses are caused by our own sin and foolishness (Prov. 21:23, Ps. 78:32-3). Some difficulties are created by other people (Ps. 9:13). God allows trouble but is always in control (2 Chr. 29:8). We have a refuge and strong defense in the Lord (Ps. 59:16). He invites us to call upon Him in our distresses (Ps. 50:15). We can expect deliverance in keeping with His will (Ps 107:6, 143:11).

The storms of the natural world are real, just as are the storms of the spiritual, psychological world. Trouble and tragedy are real. Evil and death are real. Jesus never said to his disciples on the stormy Sea of Galilee, "This is no storm. The storm is in your mind." He never said that. Instead he said to the storm, "Peace, be still." And it was ...
