A number of years ago, the computer magazine, PC World did a review of a book entitled The Policeman's Beard is Half Constructed, (Warner Books, New York, 1984). It is a book that was written by a computer program called Racter (short for Raconteur) from Mindscape. The software was developed to help people do brainstorming. The book is filled with essays, poems, limericks, stories and conversations, all of which were written by the computer using this software. Here's a couple of examples which Racter came ...
When I was a pastor in rural southern Alberta, we held our Easter Sunrise worship services in a cemetery. It was difficult to gather in the dark, since neither mountains nor forests hid the spring-time sun, and the high desert plains lay open to almost ceaselessly unclouded skies. Still, we mumbled in hushed whispers as we acknowledged one another, and saved our booming tones for the final rousing chorus of “Up from the grave he arose…!” We did not shake the earth as much as we hoped. But we were confident ...
With some things, once you get started, it’s hard to stop. Things like eating salted peanuts and reading a good murder mystery and doing a challenging crossword puzzle. Or, in my own case, preaching sermons in a series entitled “God is like…” In that first sermon of the series I said: My purpose is simply to help all of us appreciate and understand more about God and to discover appropriate responses to this Holy One. I hope our exploration will provide both comfort and challenge. And I expect some ...
Do you remember the fairy tale "Snow White"? Recall how the wicked witch peered into her magic looking glass and said, "Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?"\n The mirror's answer was quite disappointing. "It's certainly not you, Ugly!"\n Does your mirror ever do that to you? Sad to say, but thousands of people's mirrors disappoint them each day.\n Have you ever known someone to look at a photograph of himself in his high school yearbook and say, "Golly, I take an awful picture. ...
"My joy is gone, grief is upon me, my heart is sick ... I mourn, and dismay has taken hold of me. Is there no balm in Gilead?" (Jeremiah 8:18, 21-22). Is there no salve, no soothing ointment, no medicine for our souls? The hymn we'll sing after the message says there is: "There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole. There is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin-sick soul."1 That's what we have in this passage from the prophet Jeremiah that my Bible describes as a "lament over Judah."2 What another ...
Introduction The seventy-third psalm mirrors the life of faith for everyone who is honest enough to allow his or her faith to be pushed to the limit. It begins with a simple, Sunday School outlook which lifts up the clear virtue of a good God who is good to good people. We all like that sort of thing, and quickly say "Amen" to that. It doesn't take long at all for the psalmist to "grow up" and realize that the simple theology of a good God smiling on good people doesn't hold much water. Just because that's ...
Call To Worship Christ is risen! The Lord is risen indeed! Glory and honor, dominion and power be to God for ever and ever. Christ is risen! Alleluia! Invocation God of life, the women came to the tomb on the first day of the week, hands laden with the spices of sadness. So we come this morning, hearts broken by the sin of the world. You met them in resurrection power, and sent them running down the path to tell others that the tomb was empty. Meet us this morning in our songs and story, in scripture and ...
The Prologue Pastor: Dear Friends, the greatest spiritual purpose of marriage is love. True love changes not only the world, but individual lives. We participate in marriage through the avenue of this love. We have come to witness the marriage of (Groom) and (Bride) who have experienced this love power. Pastor: Who gives this woman in marriage? Father: Her family because of our respect and consideration for (Bride) and (Groom's) decision to marry. Special Music: "Parent's Prayer" (Praise Hymn Soundtracks, ...
COMMENTARY Old Testament: Isaiah 9:2-7 A child is born whose name is wonderful and whose government is characterized by permanence, justice, and righteousness. The people of Isaiah's day were in darkness. Assyria had just taken Zebulon and Naphtali to captivity in 734 B.C. Out of this darkness the people see a light of God's promise of a messianic king, a son of God. This produces great rejoicing. His royal names define his character: wisdom, courage, fatherly concern, and peace. His government will be ...
COMMENTARY Old Testament: Proverbs 8:1-4, 22-31 Wisdom was with Yahweh when he created the earth. Before the earth was created, Wisdom, a female figure, was created and observed Yahweh's bringing the world into shape: the earth, heavens, the boundaries of the sea, and the foundations of the earth. According to this passage, Yahweh did not create out of nothing, but ordered creation. The climax of creation is humanity in whom Wisdom delighted and rejoiced. In the Old Testament wisdom is used to express God' ...
Theme: The marriage covenant in both the First Lesson and the Gospel provides an image of the kind of intimacy which God seeks with his people. For Hosea this means going back to the honeymoon period (the Exodus). In the Gospel Jesus suggests that he is the bridegroom and his disciples are the bride. It was a fitting time to celebrate the marriage. COMMENTARY Old Testament: Hosea 2:14-23 The prophet Hosea speaks the word of God to the eighth century people of Israel (the northern kingdom). It was an age of ...
The time of Pentecost was a joyous one in the lives of the Jewish people. In contrast to Passover, where they ate unleavened bread to commemorate the solemn passage out of Egyptian slavery, they baked yeast bread of the first harvest of grain of the new growing season. The feast of Pentecost always occurred on Sunday, fifty days after Passover. Jewish pilgrims came from all over the world to be in the holy city for that celebration. Jesus died during Passover. He, however, came alive, conversed with His ...
Words Of Preparation from Isaiah 55:6-7 Seek the Lord while he may be found, call upon him while he is near, let the wicked forsake his way,and the unrighteous their thoughts;let them return to the Lord, that he may have mercy on them,And to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. A Prayer Of Preparation (May be offered in unison) Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we ...

Call to Worship Tell out the greatness of the Lord. Rejoice in God your Savior. Prayer of Confession Infinite Parent, Incarnate Offspring, Inclusive Spirit, in Jesus Christ you have experienced our humanity. We admit that we are not yet holy in spirit, soul and body. Our worship is not always wholehearted. Our hearts and minds are often arrogant, prejudiced, unchangeable. Our bodies are too prone to rule us, and bad habits jeopardize our health. Forgive our faults and fulfill your promise through the ...
(Name) and (name), as you stand here in the front of the church, it may feel like you're onstage, and indeed you are. All eyes are upon you, and all hearts are beating with yours in the excitement of this much-anticipated event. But in truth. we are all on stage. We are participants in the Service of Worship you have created to honor our Lord, as he comes to bless your new life together. You designed this worship experience to praise God for all he has done for us through our Lord Jesus Christ. It is your ...
For a Cancer Victim Preached at a service of a boyhood friend who died at fifty after a long, painful struggle with cancer. His victory over his affliction was a great inspiration to family and friends. In the Old Testament we read that one day King David was visibly shaken and sad of heart. A close friend, a loyal commander of his army, and a distinguished hero had been killed. When King David recovered from his shock he turned to his servants and said: "Do you know that a prince and a great man has ...
It was Easter Sunday. One thousand, seven hundred fifty showed up for worship that day. Boy, was this place full! And it really felt good. We sang some of the same hymns as today. I gave the kids red Easter eggs and my sermon title was: “Don’t Be Alarmed.” The main idea was that Christ is alive and with us, so there need not be any event or situation in our lives here that should scare us. In addition, even at our death and the death of the people we love, we need not have any fear since Christ has come ...
Prelude Opening Skit (The setting is a modern living room with the Father working at a small table to the right and two children playing on the floor center stage. The choir enters singing a traditional Christmas Hymn and wearing hats and scarves to suggest outer wear. They proceed toward the left side of the altar area. A door bell rings, and the oldest child crosses down left and pantomimes opening a door.) Oldest Child: Look! Christmas carolers! (The other child runs to door.) Dad, come quick! There are ...
SETTING: Monologues by the father, mother, brother, sister and grandmother of Judas TIME: Christ's ministry FATHER OF JUDAS: I am just so angry with that ... that Jesus ... that self-proclaimed Messiah ... why he knew exactly what he was doing, taking those twelve fine young men down a dead-end path. You can't tell me for a second that Jesus didn't know what he was doing ... he knew he'd be crucified ... he even predicted it, I'm told. No, he knew. He tempted fate every chance he had. He challenged the ...
Fascinations often come upon me from the strangest sources. For instance, two recent obituaries strike me as being peculiarly fascinating. The first is that of Vitaly Rubin, aged fifty-eight, a Soviet scholar. Rubin, a native of Moscow, was the former leader of the Soviet Jewish emigration movement. The intrigue here is that in 1976, Rubin, a Russian, was allowed to emigrate to Israel where he taught Chinese philosophy, of all things, at Hebrew University. The other obituary was David Wadell Guion's, aged ...
A Monologue For Easter Part One I had always lived in the village of Nazareth. I am Mary. (bows slightly) It was a common place. Certainly, there has never been anything special about Nazareth but it was my home and I loved it. My parents lived there and also my fiancé, Joseph, who was a reputable carpenter. He was a righteous man and came from the lineage of the family of King David. I knew he was a good man and one that would be a fine husband. Our families had arranged the marriage and soon I would be ...
G.K. Chesterton one time said, "Christianity has not been tried and found wanting. Rather it has been found difficult and not tried." It would seem strange that after almost two thousand years of history there should still be confusion about the real nature of the Christian religion, and yet there can be no question but that it is widely misunderstood and hence misinterpreted. Some men reduce Christianity to something easy, while others make it impossible. With our contemporary situation bringing ...
I want to encourage you to do something. If you have never read Victor Hugo’s memorable novel the “Hunchback of Notre Dame,” pick up a copy and read it. Hugo uses an interesting literary technique in the story. The reader is allowed to see the basic decency and humanity of Quasimodo, the hunchback, while the crowd sees him only as a monstrous freak. The story, in its essence, is part tragedy, and part hope. Our text this morning, not surprisingly, comes from Luke’s Gospel. This story also, is part tragedy ...
"How can I give you up, O Ephraim!" (v. 8) Prayer: Dear Father, we cannot fool you or pretend to be something we’re not; you know us too well. Open our minds and our understanding to know you as best we can, and to grow in appreciation of your great mercy. Amen "I’ve given him a chance three times now. Three times he let me down. I’m not going to be generous any more. I’ve had it. I don’t want to get burned again." This was Douglas, a man usually willing to go the second mile. He was known for his good ...
