... to carry on for him all the wonderful qualities of living that he had shown to us. There’s a story I’ve told a thousand times. It concerns a painter by the name of Sir Edwin Landseer. He painted murals and one of his greatest works of art adorns a wall in a tavern in Scotland. On the day when the mural was being dedicated, a bottle of champagne accidently popped, sending a stream of bubbly liquid onto the mural. Dead center, a dark stain appeared. Efforts to clean it were of no avail and all determined ...
... ’t know of anyone or any family that goes out marveling. I don’t know of anyone or any family who will go out on a Sunday in search of marvelous things. And it’s a shame, because there’s much to marvel about. Take a walk through the local art gallery, a walk-through a State Park, a ride over a country road on a late fall afternoon, or paddling a canoe in the waters of the Adirondacks. In each and every one of those marveling possibilities, you may not have been able to take things back with you to ...

... room she walked into and every life she encountered, she also had a big and a generous heart. No one logged as many volunteer hours as my Aunt Helen did. Whether it be at the nursing home where she lived, the Kiwanis Club, the Polish National Alliance, the Polish Arts Club, my aunt made it a point to give back to the community. She never forgot her Black Rock roots or her Polish heritage and how blessed she was to grow up in a family that gave so much to her. Because she had been blessed, she felt obligated ...
... the other. When one became a success, then the other would be able to study. Since Albrecht seemed the more talented of the two, his friend spent the next year at all sorts of hard labor. In the meantime, Albrecht completed his studies and began to sell his art and was finally in a position to help his roommate. By that time however, the hands of that self-sacrificing young man were so gnarled and scarred from the hard jobs he took on, he could no longer hold an artist’s brush. One fateful day, Albrecht ...
... time to time I have attempted to use varying images for God in my prayer life. As noted earlier, Jesus frequently addressed God as Father. In what has come to be called the Lord’s Prayer, the opening words employ that image. . . “Our Father who art in heaven . . .” Many prayers prayed in public settings begin with a brief form of address such as “Gracious God,” “Holy One,” “Loving Father” or “Loving Mother.” What follows are some of my ways I’ve used images of God to begin prayers. ... good deal of time, particularly through his parables, teaching others how to put themselves last, take on a mentality of service, and develop an empathetic awareness of those around them in every cultural context. Using a technique I like to call the art of the “teachable moment,” Jesus typically responds to real-life situations with stories that help people see the problems with their behaviors, the glitches in their theology, or the harm in their approach toward others. In today’s scripture, we see ...

According to Dr. T. Berry Brazelton, a father's involvement with a child increases the child's IQ, the child's motivation to learn, and the child's self-confidence. In addition, children with involved dads are more likely to develop a sense of humor as well as an "inner excitement."

A family was driving from Fort Lauderdale to Tampa, Florida, and as far as the eye could see, orange trees were loaded with fruit. When they stopped for breakfast, the dad ordered orange juice with my eggs. "I'm sorry," the waitress said. "I can't bring you orange juice. Our machine is broken." At first he was dumbfounded. Here they were surrounded by millions of oranges, and they obviously had oranges in the kitchen as orange slices garnished their plates. What was the problem? No juice? Hardly. They were ...
Television has a real problem. They have no page two.
When a person works an eight-hour day and receives a fair day's pay for his time, that is a wage. When a person competes with an opponent and receives a trophy for his performance, that is a prize. When a person receives appropriate recognition for his long service or high achievements, that is an award. But when a person is not capable of earning a wage, can win no prize, and deserves no award yet receives such a gift anyway that is a good picture of God's unmerited favor. This is what we mean when we ...
