Job’s longing gaze shifts now from the public approbation he experienced in the past to remembering his earlier expectation of a long and fruitful life. I will die in my own house. Job alludes to a comfortable death surrounded by family with the noun qen, “nest” (NIV house). The word elsewhere describes nests of ...

... then to assist others to become followers of the Way. The Way, people of Christ - that's the description of the Christian faith and its adherents, used a number of times in Acts, even before they were called Christians. This term was not always meant as a term of approbation to be called of the Way. Often it was a slur against the believer in Christ, for the pagan priests were convinced that the Christian way was a way of heresy. Later, Paul was to say to Felix, "I do admit this to you: I worship the God of ...

... India? Heyer, at the age of 48 and recently a widower, eagerly accepted the call. In his farewell letter, he wrote: Reader 2: “I feel calm and cheerful, having taken this step after serious and prayerful consideration. The smiles of friends have cheered, and the approbation of the churches has encouraged me thus far. But I am aware that, ere long, amidst a tribe of men whose language will be strange to me, I shall behold those smiles only in remembrance, and hear the voice of encouragement only in dying ...

... who we are and what we have achieved, as though he should enjoy the privilege of our presence. The error of the Pharisee was that he came in his own name, reminding God of lawful obligations that he had fulfilled, behavior which ought to bring God’s approbation. To him God might have said, "Indeed! Does that entitle you to something? What do I owe you?" Is there anyone among us who is not familiar with that error? The error of the Pharisee is that his worship focused on himself. He measured others in the ...

... it. Just because Ahab found it a simple matter to sabotage the character of Naboth and take over his vineyard, did not mean God was pleased with his underhanded dealing. Because we do wrong and seem to "get by with it" does not mean God puts his approbation upon it. Rather, God knows character is often wrought through adversity, so having it too easy is not always good for us. Norman Rockwell, the great American artist, said, "When I want a dog model, I always go to the city pound. Dogs that have taken a ...

May God grant us the same wisdom to work while we have time and opportunity ... it will not always be ours. DIVINE APPROBATION IS BEAUTIFUL Mary’s action did seem a bit illogical - and there were "instant accusers." They called it a waste, they would call it "religious fanaticism" today. But go ahead and serve with devotion like hers and then listen carefully, for you’ll find ...

... the latter, talking about it with discriminating appraisal, blessing it with unhesitating and hearty approval. Think what an evangelizing effect such an emphasis would have in the home - everybody looking for things to praise; in the office - unstinted, approbation of every evidence of efficiency, courtesy, fidelity, and thoughtfulness; in industry - a mutual agreement between management and labor that for a change, and for a solid six months, there would be an honest campaign on the part of each ...

... mind, the epithet all too generally suggests sentimentalism, spinelessness, weakness, even cowardice. It is used as a term of derision, contempt, and obloquy. But many words that are now held in high regard, words that were once thought of as designations of highest approbation, were as unpopular as the word "Pacifist" is today. Take the word "Christian," for example. To call a man a Christian in the early days was to label him with the worst epithet available. But what did the Christians to about it ...

... . Dr. Samuel Johnson provides us a powerful instance of how love bolsters self-esteem. "He expected everyone he met to be disgusted or terrified by his looks and his nervous mannerisms, his convulsive starts and twitches. For such a young man, the approbation of an experienced and still attractive woman can be a lifesaver."* * John Wain, Samuel Johnson: A Biography, (New York, Viking Press, 1975, p. 65.) ... . We give thanks for your revelation and guidance by means of Jesus. It is for us to confess our waywardness and fickle devotion to what we have learned from Jesus. The pressures of daily life, the challenges to get ahead, the search for approval and approbation from our peers sometimes cause us to forget the loyalty and allegiance we once swore to Jesus as Lord and Master. We acknowledge we have paid more attention to our doubts than to his challenge to doubt our doubts. Determined to keep up on the daily ...

... zone. Mark’s text makes their search fairly desperate — “they hunted for him.” When Jesus’ disciples finally located their missing Master, they berated him: “Everyone is searching for you,” they declared. They made this declaration, not as praise but as approbation. But what the disciples were really searching for was their own agenda. They were trawling and prowling for their own success and stardom. Their personal egos were the scent dogs on that search for Jesus. They were not looking for ...

Ps. 123:2) for guidance, approbation, and correction. It is such a humble walk with God that makes it possible to act justly and to love ḥesed, and thus this requirement sums up the other two. This time Jesus not only criticizes their search for human approbation but also exposes its hypocrisy. Their actions are the opposite of the reputation that they cultivate. The vulnerability of widows is a frequent biblical theme (cf. 18:2–5); God’s people are expected to share his concern for them, not to exploit ...

... backhanded way to stress the inappropriateness of his own innocent suffering. If deserved punishment is the cause of “woe,” Job’s innocent suffering is doubly painful since it is undeserved. Although he is “innocent,” Job experiences the shame of public approbation (shame is not an inner feeling but the public embarrassment of public condemnation) and feels drowned in . . . affliction. 10:16–17 Any of Job’s attempts to resist public condemnation and to exhibit a sense of confidence in his own ...

I have no other view than to promote the public good, and am unambitious of honors not founded in the approbation of my Country.

Cheerfulness keeps up a kind of daylight in the mind, filling it with a steady and perpetual serenity. An inward cheerfulness is an implicit praise and thanksgiving to Providence under all dispensations. It is a kind of acquiescence in the state wherein we are placed, and a secret approbation of the Divine Will in His conduct towards man.

The chief difference between words and deeds is that words are always intended for men for their approbation, but deeds can be done only for God.

... ago we joined Jesus on his visit to his hometown synagogue in Nazareth. The people loved it when Jesus read from their scripture about the acceptable year when their God would come and save them. But soon their adulation of young rabbi Jesus turned to approbation when Jesus reminded them, from their own scripture, that there were many hungry widows in Israel, but God fed none of them, only a foreign woman. And there were many sick people in Israel during the days of Elijah, but God's prophet healed only ...
